Indian cos in hiring mode, may add 1 million jobs in FY11

The Economic Times: March 10, 2010

New Delhi: Indian companies are the most optimistic on hiring plans for April-June 2010, with the organised sector expected to create close to a million new jobs in FY11, driven by a revival in economic growth and strong job opportunities, according to two global employment trend surveys.
The quarterly Employment Outlook Survey conducted by HR consulting firm Manpower showed two in every five Indian companies plan to increase their headcount in the second quarter of 2010. A separate survey by HR Services provider Ma Foi Management Consultants showed companies are optimistic about FY11, but are treading with caution in the April-June quarter.
The Manpower study pegged India’s net employment outlook (NEO) at 39 for the second quarter, an improvement of four percentage points compared to the previous quarter. The survey covered over 5,300 employers across 30 cities in the country.
Hiring intentions were highest in the services sector, with an NEO of 48%. Within the sector, employers in the finance, insurance, real estate segments have reported an NEO of 41, an increase of 4 percentage points over the previous quarter. The services sector had witnessed the biggest jump in hiring intent last quarter too, up 20 points over the previous survey. The weakest hiring pace is reported by employers in the transportation & utilities sector (28%).
Employers in the manufacturing sector (38%) report substantial improvements in their quarter-over-quarter hiring outlook. Positive hiring intentions can also be seen in sectors like public administration & education and wholesale trade & retail sector with an outlook of 32. However, hiring intention has decreased marginally in both these sectors compared to the previous survey.
Compared with April-June 2009, employers in all seven industry sectors anticipate a stronger hiring pace for Q2’10, the survey said. On a year-on-year basis, improvements are reported by employers in the services sector (up 22 points), finance, insurance & real estate sector (up 21 points), and mining & construction sector (up 20 points).
Companies in all four regions in the country expect year-over-year hiring activity to improve considerably. Employers in various regions — East (42%), West (40%) and South (40%) report the country’s strongest hiring expectations.
The study also pointed out that employers in 27 of 36 countries surveyed expect some positive hiring activity in the second quarter. The number of countries with negative overall hiring intent has halved from 18 in the previous survey.
Besides India, economies like Brazil (38), Taiwan (33) , Costa Rica (23), Peru (23), Australia (22) and Singapore (20) are among those reporting strong intent to hire. China reported an NEO of 14 for the second quarter this year. On the other hand, hiring plans were weakest in Italy, Spain and Ireland for the April-June period.
The survey is conducted quarterly to measure employers’ intentions to increase or decrease the number of employees in their workforce during the next quarter.
The Ma Foi survey, on its part, said the financial sector has learnt its lessons from the slowdown and is looking to hire over 46,000 people in 2010, while the private healthcare sector, which survived the slump, is expected to add 2.95 lakh jobs.
The real estate and construction sector is expected to generate 1.36 lakh jobs with the continued growth in infrastructure and the growing market for lower value housing in smaller towns and suburban townships.
Meanwhile, continued international demand is expected to pump up hiring in the IT sector, while as far as ITES is concerned, domestic demand is growing though many international contracts have not yet returned to normalcy. The IT and ITES sector is expected to generate 97,000 jobs next fiscal, the fourth largest among all sectors.
Private healthcare, which witnessed good growth even during the slowdown, is expected to add 2.95 lakh jobs. The survey expected education, training and consultancy segment to add 83,000 jobs in the next fiscal. The transport, storage and communication sector is expected to add 27,000 jobs, and the manufacturing sector 68,000 jobs. SSIs still appear to be cautious, hit by liquidity constraints. The energy sector is expected to generate 15,000 new jobs with major projects expected to come on stream.
The hospitality and travel sector is expected to new jobs of 1.37 lakh next year against its current base of 59.51 lakh. India’s trade sector is expected to 13,000 jobs on top of the current 6.11 lakh jobs. This is because the organised retail is yet to recover fully, the survey said. The survey was conducted among 1,000 companies in India across 11 industry segments.

NIREM takes initiative to develop human resource for Indian Real Estate: Launches courses in real estate management

The total absence of any system of real estate education in India has been affecting the quality of human resources available to this sector. Therefore IDS National Institute of Real Estate Management (IDS NIREM), established by the Industry Development Society for Real Estate, has taken initiative to develop professionals dedicated to real estate sector.

With the meteoritic growth in property and real estate business during last few years, the real estate sector became more complex in structure and more international in scope. This new structure of real estate business has in turn created the acute shortage of trained real estate professionals who can manage the business efficiently. This shortage of professionals also highlights the need for specialised real estate education in India. Incidentally, in India there is neither any system of real estate education nor any real estate courses, even though the sector contributes significantly to the national GDP and is the second largest employer.

On the other hand, Indian real estate industry leaders including top real estate developers, multinational real estate consultants, housing finance institutions etc have repeatedly aired their concern at the total absence of courses in real estate in India. The total absence of real estate management courses or any systematic education procedure to develop career in real estate is visibly affecting the quality of human resources available to the Indian property market. Also, though real estate is one of the largest employers and there are thousands of vacancies at different levels and in different areas, developers are forced to spend huge time and money on recruitment and training of candidates from other sectors. Moreover, once trained, these people leave immediately for better opportunities and therefore the cycle of spending time and money on recruitment and training of candidates from other sectors continues for developers and other employers.

In view of the above situation, IDS National Institute of Real Estate Management (IDS NIREM), www.nirem.org, has launched real estate education programs in the areas of real estate sales & brokerage management, marketing, appraisal, valuation, finance, investment, facilities management etc. According to the institute, at present it is offering all courses through distance learning mode and by the end of the year full time programs will be launched.

NIREM is currently admitting fresh students and real estate professionals for its PG Diploma program in real estate sales and agency management. This is a one-year distance learning program, launched in order to create a pool of human resource, committed to serve the real estate sector. These trained professionals, due to their commitment and specialization in real estate, will serve real estate companies for long duration, contrary to others who leave as soon as they get next opportunity.

Post Graduate Diploma Program in Real Estate Sales & Agency Management (PGD-RESAM) is the first such specialised real estate sales & marketing course offered in the country. Property market analysts also attribute launch of this specialised courses to qualitative growth of Indian real estate market and its movement towards next level from the nascent stage.

The course objective is to provide the participants with thorough knowledge and practical skills to plan & execute successful sales & leasing strategies for different types of properties, plan & manage real estate agencies and carry out basic appraisal.

This high impact, industry-driven and employment-oriented program offers both the fresh graduates who intend to pursue a career in real estate and the working professionals, an unequaled educational growth and career advancement opportunity. For further information, please visit www.nirem.org

For information to Journalists:
Why this course:
This course was planned in response to a consultative meeting with developers, multinational consultants, HFIs etc during which a common observation was the skill gap in the existing breed of real estate professionals. The problem was attributed to the lack of real estate focussed education & training programs in the country that can train students as per the needs of real estate sector. Also, at present, real estate companies have to rely on professionals coming from other business sectors, who require huge investment of both time and money but leave on getting the first opportunity. This is because they do no want to specialize in real estate sector. Therefore, the urgent need of the hour is to create a pool of professionals, specialised in real estate business.
About the Institute:
IDS National Institute of Real Estate Management (IDS-NIREM) has been established by ‘The Industry Development Society for Real Estate’, which is a real estate sector development and promotion body. NIREM is planned as a Centre of Excellence in Real Estate Education, Training & Research.
